Complete Privacy & Transparency

Your journal is yours alone.

Plume was built with one non-negotiable principle: your private thoughts stay private. Here's exactly how we protect your privacy.

Our Core Promise

Plume has zero access to your journal. Not "limited access" or "encrypted access" — absolutely zero access. We built Plume so that it's technically impossible for us or anyone else to read your entries.

Your journal entries, thoughts, memories, and personal reflections never leave your device unless you explicitly choose to export them. There are no servers, no cloud syncing (unless you set it up yourself), and no way for anyone to access your data remotely.

How Plume Protects Your Privacy

🔒 Everything Stays on Your Device

All your journal entries are stored locally in a SQLite database on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. This database never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it.

  • No cloud storage: Plume doesn't use any cloud services or remote servers
  • No internet connection required: The app works completely offline
  • No internet connection made: Plume never makes any network requests — period

🔐 Encrypted Exports

If you want to back up your journal or transfer it to another device, you can export your data. These exports are encrypted to protect your privacy:

  • Optional encryption: Choose to encrypt your export files with a password you create
  • You control the key: We never see or store your encryption password
  • Industry-standard encryption: Your exports are protected with robust encryption algorithms

🔄 Secure Syncing

We use CloudKit with encrypted syncs to keep your journal seamlessly updated across all your Apple devices:

  • End-to-end encryption: Data is encrypted before it leaves your device
  • Apple's secure infrastructure: Syncing happens through CloudKit's privacy-focused architecture
  • Your iCloud, your control: Data syncs through your personal iCloud account

What We Don't Do

Here's a complete list of things Plume absolutely does not do:

  • No servers: We don't operate any servers that could receive your data
  • No analytics: We don't track how you use the app
  • No telemetry: We don't collect usage statistics or crash reports
  • No tracking: No cookies, no fingerprinting, no behavioral tracking
  • No advertising: We don't show ads or work with ad networks
  • No third-party services: We don't integrate with any external services
  • No accounts required: You don't need to create an account or provide an email
  • No internet connections: The app never connects to the internet
  • No data collection: We literally cannot see your data, even if we wanted to

We operate under the principle: if we don't collect it, we can't leak it, lose it, or be forced to hand it over.

Your Rights & Control

With Plume, you have complete control:

  • Own your data: Your journal belongs to you, stored on your device
  • Export anytime: Take your data with you in standard formats
  • Delete anytime: Uninstalling Plume removes all your data from your device
  • No lock-in: Your data isn't trapped in proprietary formats or cloud services

Questions About Privacy?

We're committed to being transparent about how Plume works and how we protect your privacy. If you have any questions or concerns, we're here to help:

  • Reach out to us with privacy questions or concerns
  • Request clarification on any aspect of our privacy approach
  • We're always happy to explain how the app works and what it does (and doesn't do)

Your trust matters to us, and we take privacy seriously — not as a marketing point, but as the foundation of how we build software.
